5 Companies Set Up During A Financial Crisis

It might appear to be a bad time to set up a business right now…but maybe it’s not. There are advantages to be had; lower costs, more choices of employees and some competitors closing down are just a few examples.

Many of the biggest brands around were set up during a recession or financial crisis – here are a few:

Founded in the 1970s In the USA in a time of market stagnation and inflation, Microsoft is now one of the most recognisable and valuable companies in the world.
Netflix has totally changed the way the world watches TV. Having spent billions of dollars on original films and tv shows, many of them highly acclaimed, Netflix is now a market leader with a huge number of paying subscribers around the world.
Another media company, Disney was founded in 1929 at the height of the great financial depression in the USA. Now the company has multiple theme parks around the world and still produces some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of all time.
Started in 2008 during the global economic crisis, AirBnB began as a simple online platform to rent out free apartments for short term, low commitment rents. Due to the state of the economy at the time, demand exploded and now the company is a major player in its field.
During the same economic downturn, two former Yahoo executives decided to develop WhatsApp. With an initial investment of $200,000 the company went on to become one of the worlds most recognized apps. Eventually it was sold to Facebook for more than $15 billion. Quite a good return on investment for the original investors.
